The leaf shape and dark color of these trees are most likely what make them the most commonly referred to. ![]() During the winter, the leaves of this tree are distinct and can be seen on the tree’s dead understory branches. Because of its ability to tolerate poor and dry conditions, the hardwood oak has evolved to become an excellent sun-loving plant. The common name for black oak and post oak is associated with each other. The wood of the blackjack oak is hard and heavy, and is often used for fuel or in the construction of fences and other rough structures. The blackjack oak gets its name from the dark color of its bark, which is sometimes nearly black. The tree is relatively tolerant of drought and poor soils. It grows in a variety of habitats, including dry, open woods, savannas, and prairies. The blackjack oak is found in the eastern and central United States, from Maine south to Florida and west to Texas. The acorns of the blackjack oak are small and black, maturing in late summer or early fall. The edges of the leaves are often finely toothed or serrated. The leaves are 3-6 inches (7.6-15.2 cm) long and 2-4 inches (5.1-10.2 cm) wide, with a deep green upper surface and a paler green underside. It typically grows to between 15-30 feet (4.6-9.1 m) tall, with a spread of 20-40 feet (6.1-12.2 m).
